Worship
Services
|
Our
worship service starts at 11:00 am, usually ending shortly after
noon. It includes music, scripture, prayers, and a sermon by our
Pastor, Duncan McIntosh, or occasional guest preachers.
Child care is available in the nursery suite during the worship
service for children ages birth to 3 years. Following the "Word for Young Worshipers" in
the worship service, children ages 4 through Kindergarten may leave the sanctuary
for the remainder of the service with the Extended Hour Teacher who will be waiting
nearby. Worship packets for older childrento use during the service can be picked
up from an usher in the foyer before the service, and returned afterwards for
use the following week. Assistive listening sets are available for use during
the worship service; please ask an usher if you would like to use one of
these sets. |

All
persons interested in further counseling concerning matters of
faith, or those who have questions about joining our
church, are encouraged to stop by the "Inquirer's Room" on the organ
side of the foyer immediately after the worship service. A staff
member or a Membership Committee representative will be available.
The Communion Service is usually celebrated on the first Sunday
each month. Communion is open to visitors.

Music
is an essential part of our worship. Valeria Foster leads the
music ministry at FBC. We are always looking for willing individuals
to join the adult choir. It's a lot of fun, too. The Adult
Choir rehearses each Wednesday night at 6:30.
The handbell choir is also looking for new ringers. (If
you can read music but have never rung handbells, Jennifer Owens would love to
teach you to ring.)
A children's choir meets for rehearsal Sunday mornings during
the Worship Service, with Rosemary Piercey directing. |

Christian
Education
Sunday
morning begins with coffee at 9:30 and is followed by Sunday
School classes at 9:40 a.m. This is a time for Bible
study and fellowship. We have classes for all groups from
Nursery to Adults, as well
as a special class for the mentally handicapped. A
class for Inquirers and New Members is offered quarterly to better
acquaint members with what it means to be a Christian in today's
world, Baptist history, and what it means to be a member of our church. In
addition, special events are held for children and young people throughout
the year.

Media
Center
Our church also
has an extensive Media Center, where books and other multimedia
selections can be checked out. In Winter, the Media Center staff
members coordinate a Children's Reading Club to encourage young
readers. |

Grief
Counseling Groups meet for persons who are facing significant
losses in
their lives, and these groups
are led by trained facilitators. Losses may include
the
loss of a loved one through death, the end or breakup of marriages
and other relationships, or other similar losses. Groups are
open to anyone who has a need; church membership is not required.
If you or someone
that you know has experienced such a loss, please call First
Baptist Church at 301-585-5454 for further information. The
Rainbows group for teens meets
each week for a similar purpose.
We also offer small groups at different times for spiritual
enrichment,
such as "Writing Your Own Spiritual Biography," and prayer groups for healing.
Call the church for more information.
The Maryland
and D.C. Chapter of Rainbows meets at FBC each Tuesday evening. Rainbows is
an international, not-for-profit organization that fosters emotional healing
among children grieving a loss from a life-altering crisis.

Youth
Ministry
|
We
are proud of the youth at FBC. Our young men and women conduct
a variety of fund raising events so that they can participate
in summer youth missions, which involve the youth in high energy
Christian fellowship, worship, community mission projects, and
fun with youth from many other regions and backgrounds. Many
of those who attend have moving experiences that have a lasting
impact.
Youth Sunday is a special Sunday, following the youth mission
trip, where our young people lead the worship service and share their enthusiasm
with the congregation.
The
Maryland and D.C. Chapter of Rainbows meets
at FBC each Tuesday evening.

Community
Missions |
Our
food closet ministry has been serving the community for about
15 years. Every Saturday morning from 10:00 to 12:00, volunteer
teams distribute supplemental food items to an average of twenty
households.
Church
volunteers also provide serving teams to assist the Shepherd's Table on a rotating
basis. The Shepherd's Table is a
Silver Spring based soup kitchen that serves a hot dinner to the hungry every
evening of the year.
For many years members of our church have contributed to and
worked in the Clothes Closet, now located at the Shepherd's Table, which provides
clothing to those who need it.
In addition, certain members of our church are active in regular
prison ministries; the church also provides inexpensive facilities and meeting
space for community groups whose purposes are consistent with our mission. Our Child
Development Center is another ministry to our community, providing preschool
education and care in a safe Christian environment.
Two other congregations share our building facilities: Faith
Baptist Church conducts worship services in French, and Emmanuel Baptist
Church conducts services in Spanish.
